Privacy policy

The short version

There is no account, no sign-in and no email address to give. There is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party software development kit of any kind inside the app. There is no server belonging to me, anywhere, so there is nowhere for your information to be sent even by accident. The App Store privacy label reads Data Not Collected, and the app ships a privacy manifest that declares no collected data types and no tracking.

What the app stores, and where

Askesis keeps a small amount of information that you create yourself. It lives on your device, and it syncs between your own devices through your own private iCloud database, using your own Apple Account. That database belongs to you. I have no access to it, no console for it, and no way to read it.

Your almsgiving intention and any closing note	Text you wrote yourself, at the start and end of a fast season
Your favourites	A reference to a prayer, a prayer section or a recipe. Not the content, just which one
When you finished setting the app up	The free week is measured from this, and it is synced so a reinstall neither resets it nor extends it

That is the complete list. There is no other user data model in the app.

What never leaves your device

• The whole calendar, and everything it computes. The fasting rules, feasts, saints, readings and the scripture text are all bundled inside the app. Nothing is fetched, so no request records what day you looked at.
• Everything you read. Which prayers you opened, which saints you looked up, what you searched for. None of it is recorded anywhere, on the device or off it.
• Every photograph the scanner takes. The camera image is read on the device by Apple's built-in text recognition and then discarded. It is never written to storage, never added to your photo library and never uploaded.

The only three things that touch the network

The app contains no networking code of its own: no request is ever constructed or sent by Askesis. Three Apple services do reach the network on your behalf, all of them under your own Apple Account.

• iCloud carries the list above between your own devices. Apple's own privacy policy governs it. Apple's sync also uses a silent background signal to tell one device that another has changed something. It asks for no permission, shows you nothing, and carries no content.
• The App Store handles buying and checking a subscription. Apple processes the payment. The app never sees a card, a name or an address, and the check that a subscription is valid runs on your device rather than on any server of mine.
• Nothing else. There is no third item.

Permissions the app asks for

• Camera, only when you first use the scanner, and only to photograph an ingredient label. The reason string in the app says exactly that.
• Notifications, only if you want reminders. Every one of them is scheduled and delivered locally by your device. No notification is ever sent from anywhere else, because there is nowhere else.

Both are optional. Decline either and the rest of the app works normally.

Children

Askesis is not directed at children, collects nothing from anyone, and has no social features, no messaging, no user-generated content shared with anybody, and no advertising.

Deleting your data

Anything you created can be deleted inside the app, and the deletion travels to your other devices. Deleting the app removes what is on that device. To remove the synced copy as well, use Settings on your iPhone or iPad, then your Apple Account, then iCloud, and manage the storage for Askesis. Because I hold nothing, there is no request to send me and nobody to ask.

This website

askesis.day sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads no fonts, scripts, images or anything else from another host. Nothing about your visit is recorded beyond the ordinary access log that any web server keeps, which the hosting provider holds and which I do not read or analyse. The one script on the site assembles the email address below so that it is not sitting in the page for a scraper to harvest; it makes no request, takes no input and stores nothing.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change ever meant the app started collecting something, it would be said plainly at the top of this page and in the app, not buried here.
